Love Like Christ: A Proverbs 31 Approach to Relationships

Sis, Let’s talk about love -- the REAL kind. Not the fairytale, rom-com, or Instagram-worthy kind, but the deep, Christ-centered love that transforms every relationship we have. Whether it’s with our spouse, our best friends, or our family, we are called to love like Christ. And girl, that’s not always easy!

The Proverbs 31 woman gives us a beautiful blueprint for godly love in action. She isn’t just about being a good wife -- she’s about embodying love in every area of her life. Aspiring to love like her may seem unattainable, but trust me, it's doable when we take it one bite at a time. So, let’s break down how we can apply this in our relationships.

1. Love in Marriage: Serving with Grace

One thing about the Proverbs 31 woman ? She loves her husband well. Proverbs 31:12 says, "She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life."  That’s a whole word!

Loving like Christ in marriage means choosing to be a blessing, even when we don’t feel like it. It’s about showing grace, being patient, and serving out of love -- not obligation. Think about Jesus washing His disciples’ feet (John 13:12-14). That kind of humility in love is powerful.

It's about showcasing every aspect of the the fruit of the spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) -- Yes ALL of it -- love, jog, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control!! It may not all be at the same time -- LOL; but in allowing the Holy Spirit to consistently work within us, He will provide us with grace for the one we need at the time that we need it.

Practical way to apply this: Speak life over your husband. Compliment him, pray for him, and be his biggest cheerleader. Love isn’t just about the big romantic gestures; it’s in the small, daily acts of kindness and encouragement.

2. Love in Friendships: Loyalty and Encouragement

For me, in friendships, loyalty is E-VE-RY-THING. Real friendships aren’t just about fun brunch dates (though we love those!). They’re about loyalty, honesty, and encouragement. Proverbs 31:26 says, "She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue."

Loving like Christ in friendships means showing up -- not just when things are good, but when they’re hard. It’s about being that friend who prays for her girls, checks in, and encourages them to be their best selves in Christ.

Practical way to apply this: Be intentional.  Send that “Hey sis, I’m thinking about you” text. Pray for your friends. Show up for them in the way you’d want them to show up for you.

3. Love in Family: Patience and Honor

Wheeew!! Family relationships can be tricky. But God calls us to love our parents, siblings, and even those difficult family members with patience and honor. Proverbs 31:28 says, "Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her."

This reminds us that love within family isn’t just about duty -- it’s about cultivating an atmosphere where love is felt and expressed and peace and joy is experienced. Even when family dynamics are tough, we can still choose love, just as Jesus did, and champion thriving in peace and joy.

Practical way to apply this: Practice forgiveness. Family can test our patience, but love covers a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8). Set boundaries if needed, but always lead with love and grace.

You are called to love, and God has equipped you to do it well.

Loving Like Christ Starts in the Heart

At the end of the day, loving like Christ isn’t about perfection—it’s about intention. None of us get it right all the time (thank God for grace!), but when we make love our priority, we reflect Jesus in the most beautiful way.

So, sis, how can you love like Christ today? Maybe it’s sending an encouraging message, showing extra patience with your spouse, or simply praying for God to soften your heart in a difficult relationship. Whatever it is, know that you are called to love, and God has equipped you to do it well.

Let’s walk in love together!
